Rupees and Paise (Posted on 2003-03-16) Difficulty: 3 of 5
I entered a store and spent one-half of the money that was in my wallet. When I came out I found that I had just as many paise as I had rupees and half as many rupees as I had paise when I went in.

How much money did I have with me when I entered the store ?

( Given: 1 Rupee = 100 Paise ).

Let the amount the individual originally had be 100*R + P

By the problem, when he left the store- he had 100*(P/2)+R
Also, by the given conditions, we have:
(1/2)*(100R+P) = 100*(P/2+R)
=> 100*R+P = 100*P+2R
=> 98R= 99P
=> R/P= 99/98
=> (R,P) =(99s, 98s)
Since neither R or P can exceed 100, it follows that the only possible valid value of a is 1.
Accordingly,  the individual had Rs. 99.98 with him when he entered the store and he had Rs. 49.99 when he left the store.
