Indostan Tableaux (Posted on 2006-07-08) Difficulty: 3 of 5
From the following enciphered code, identify that which is described. If you have trouble seeing the answer at first, you are not alone. You may have to feel your way to solve each part, and then put the pieces together for the whole.

The answer is AN ELEPHANT.

Converting each number into its base two equivalent will produce eleven rows. As one can surmise, the fourth and eighth lines are simply separators that divide each line by a group of three rows. Dividing each group into twelve 2-by-3 "cells", one may recognize that the code is written based on the Braille code -- with each "raised dot" indicated by a 1.

The plaintext of this code is the familiar list of "parts" of the elephant as observed by six men of Indostan in the infamous poem by John Godfrey Saxe, Six Blind Men and the Elephant.
