This Poem Is Much Too Deep For You (Posted on 2007-02-03) Difficulty: 3 of 5
Illuminations conjugate
Laconic pillars demonstrate
Insanity shall permeate
Kaleidoscopic interstates
Each third line holds a golden key
Ninety eight and quarters three
Oh no, oh no, it cannot be
Nocturnal psychic bourgeoisie
Search with great care but not the aft
Envelop the elusive craft
Noiseless Argonauts araft
Snickering with hardy laughs
Eleven babies, nonchalant
Inter a masterful croissant
Themes prowl and slither to the front
With an aspiring debutante
As fire dies down, it turns to ash, the
Kindling for some balderdash
Elitist savants stop to clash
Succumbing to the wad of cash
Until Theo Geisel appeared
People stalwart ran in fear
To those who were to be revered
Hints at the odd, the strange, the weird
Entire phalanxes back then
Betwitxt a pachydermal pen
Relished by the wisest men
And then again and then again
Infinite souls just stood around
Not just across, but up to down
Catharsis of the mind abound
Eccentric knowledge could confound
Look FORE your hints, the rest is spam
Lupine monsters facing lamb
Success with the ultimate exam

Now have you found it, Sam-I-Am?

The obvious hint is "Each third line holds the golden key."
Reproducing each third line:

1. Insanity shall permeate
2. Ninety eight and quarters three
3. Search with great care but not the aft
4. Snickering with hardy laughs
5. Themes prowl and slither to the front
6. Kindling for some balderdash
7. Until Theo Geisel appeared
8. Hints at the odd, the strange, the weird
9. Relished by the wisest men
10. Not just across, but up to down
11. Look FORE your hints, the rest is spam
12. Now have you found it, Sam-I-Am?

Lines 1,6,8, and 9 refer to nonsense, which is most of the poem. Insanity, weird, and balderdash are all synonyms and "A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men" is a quote from Willy Wonka.

Lines 2,4,7, and 12 refer to Dr. Seuss. Ninety-eight and quarters three is from "Oh the places you'll go"; the line being "And will you succeed? Yes you will indeed. Ninety eight and three quarters percent guaranteed. Hardy lauhgs is just... well, hardy laughs. Theo Geisel is Seuss's real name. And Sam-I-Am is Seuss's Green Eggs and Ham character.

The remaining lines tell you what to do. Three hint at "front" and the fourth tells you to read "Not just across, but up to down." Reading the front (first) letter of each sentence from up to down yields:

I like nonsense. It wakes up the brain cells.
This is a quote from Dr. Seuss.

The rest of the poem, is, as it says, spam. Rhymezone, thesaurus, and dictionary.com helped me to find random words as filler.

So what's the answer? In the theme of nonsense, I propose whistling hippopotamuses, but many equivalently nonsensical answers exist.
