Each set of the string of letters consists of two separate words which are synonyms of each other in which the last letter of the first word and the first letter of the second word is congruent and the foregoing letter is deleted when constituting each of the foregoing strings.
Rhe insertion of the missing letter relevant to  each of the strings transforms the given group inclusive of the problem text as follows:

o ARID/DRY
o BIG/GIANT
o BOY/YOUTH
o CHUM/MATE
o COIL/LOOP
o CRY/YELL
o DIGIT/TOE
o GIRL/LASS
o HOOF/FOOT
o ILK/KIND
