Locksmith (Posted on 2008-12-19) Difficulty: 2 of 5
K, the Key, is to be moved to contact L, the Latch, so as to move it totally into the grey area.

Locked
K L
Open

L

1 3
2 8 9 10
K 5 L
4 6 11
7

The object again is to move K to dislodged L. The "tumblers", the numbered blocks, are only to slide in the direction of their respective lengths.

How might you accomplish this?

Note: the black areas are void space.

there is a minor flaw in yours as well, when you move 3 left 1 square you forget that 5 is in the way, thus 3 can not be moved until you get the 5 out of the way.  here is my solution, my notation is (a,b,c) where a is the piece, b is the direction, and c is the number of spaces moved.

(1,L,1)-(2,L,1)-(5,U,2)-(K,R,1)-(4,U,1)-(6,L,2)-(7,L,2)-(8,D,2)-(9,D,2)-(K,R,2)-(5,D,1)-(3,L,1)-(10,U,1)-(K,R,2) and this is a total of 14 moves.  I'm leave it to someone to run a computer search to determine if this is indeed the shortest solution possible.
