C

If you read the title aloud, it sounds like "An old joke with a new twist." The question becomes "Why did a chicken cross the road?" and the answer, of course, is C: "To get to the other side."

I'm assuming that is correct. Some of the word choices seem a little odd, and what the words are supposed to mean are not as immediately obvious as they could be. Anyway, I don't know what the other three choices are supposed to say.

This type of phoenetic spellings was introduced in 1956 by Howard Chace in his book Anguish Languish ("English Language"). The entire text of the book, containing excerpts such as:

Marry hatter ladle limb
Itch fleas worse widest snore.
An ever-wear debt Marry win
Door limb worse shorter gore.

can be found here.
