Another way of looking at it is that once it is determined that 9, 8 and 7 are to be the hundreds digits, the 6 has greatest multiplicative effect if put right after the 7, as the 60 that it represents gets multiplied by the two larger hundreds values, and this can be continued for placing the 5 and 4 and then the 3, 2 and 1.
