At the Olympic Games (6) (Posted on 2004-09-27) Difficulty: 2 of 5
Argentine, Brazil, Colombia, Dominican Republic and Equator competed at the Olympic Games, placing first through fifth in an event. They said:

Argentine: "I was not last."
Brazil: "Canada got the bronze."
Canada: "Argentine ended behind Equator."
Dominican Republic: "Equator got silver."
Equator: "Dominican Republic didn't get gold."

The gold and silver winners lied, but the other three told the truth. How did the event end?

The event ended as under:

Equator-- First with Gold

Brazil-- Second with Silver

Canada-- Third with Bronze

Dominican Republic-- Fourth

Argentine-- Last

Reason:-

If, Dominican said true, Equator got silver and hence must speak true. Hence, Dominican must have got gold. But, Equator's statement, D didn't get gold becomes contradictory. Hence, what Dominican said is false. Equator didn't get silver. Also, Equator's statement Dominican didn't get gold becomes true. Hence, Equator must have got Gold.

If Canada's statement is true, then Argenetine ended behind Equator and leading to Argentine's statement becomes true, leading to three true statements. Thus, Canada's statement is false. Already, Dominican's statement is false. So, out of Argenetine and Brazil, one of them must be true. If Argentine told true, then Canada's statement becomes true. Hence, Argentine is false.

Brazil told the truth and he is the silver winner and his statement is true, revealing Canada as the bronze winner. With Argentine being the last, D ended fourth.

Thus, the final result is E, B, C, D and A.
