How Fast?!? (Posted on 2005-08-08) Difficulty: 2 of 5
You are driving a 3.2 Litre, V6 car whose engine speed is 3500rpm.

If the piston face diameter is 80mm, then what is the average speed of the piston?

3.2 litres, refers to total piston volume

Solution Another way of saying it. | Comment 2 of 7 |

3.2 l / 6 = 533,333 mm^3

Base of cylinder = pi * (40 mm) ^2 = 5026.548245743664 mm ^ 2

Vol / base = distance per half cycle = 106.103295394597 mm

This is travelled 7000 times in a minute at 3500 rpm, so the speed is

106.103295394597 * 7000 mm/min = 742723.0677621791 mm/min.

That's 44.56338406573074 km/hr or 27.69040308705332 mi/hr.

To make the precision consistent with the input, make that 45 km/hr or 28 mi/hr.
