Shorten and halve (Posted on 2005-09-21) Difficulty: 2 of 5
A six letter word, that when you take out its last letter, becomes half of its meaning. What word is it?

Question Am I trying too hard? | Comment 13 of 33 |

I know that the difficulty rating is 2, but it's apparently kicking our collective behinds.  Given that this is in word problems, I'm wondering if creative interpretation of the question is required.

For example, perhaps "its last letter" refers to the last letter alphabetically.  Then "tangle" could become "angle" which might work as an answer.

Perhaps "its last letter" refers to the last letter of "its".

Maybe a "six letter word" is a word made from six different letters, but not necessarily six letters long.

My brain's been rambling off in these different directions trying to get unstuck on this problem.  Any other thoughts?
