There is a snake in Australia which would have a 10 letter name, but I doubt that Gamer would have considered it.  And from your musings this doesn't seem 'to fit the bill'.

The "Death Adder" is a small sluggish snake, about 15" (375mm) in length and is found in the desert areas of Central Australia.
