You might try to tough out a solution without it, but I think you will find it most practical to start with a particular individual (usually a common sight, but not common in this paragraph.) Go to work on solving this, all you cunning cryptologists!

After you find out that it's about e, it gets easier.

Write down the sentence, under each letter wtite down the number according to a=1, b=2,...  Under this line write down e.
Deduct the second row from the first (number by number).  Use the above a=1,...to translate the new found numbers into letters and then find:
e, the base of  the natural logarithm named in honor of euler
