brainjn, I can't speak for tomarken's inspiration, but I had been working on a similar idea until I saw his posted solution.  I was actually going through each letter of the alphabet and trying to see if there was a letter that could commonly be added to the set of anagrammed letters to spell a new word....It had not yet occurred to me to try a sequential approach through the alphabet until I saw his post.
