In about my Grade 5 reader, they such things back then, but then many US states continued with 'graded reading' materials (maybe they still do).
We had a poem, to which this comment indirectly links, about an animal and some scholars.
My thwarted (?) solution was that this was a graphic. I saw the columns and the zero rows as demarcations of 3x3 tiles which needed to be manipulated to make up the image, like a "15 Puzzle" where you slide tiles to an open space.
Well, I guess I have the animal but not the dialog :-(
