I bought an expensive gift for my wife one year on December 15th. I would not have been able to afford it except the store gave me a 12 month loan. It comes due every 15th of the month for the entirety of this year.
This month it is due on a Friday, last month is was due on a Tuesday, and next month it will be due on a Monday.
What month is it?
The month must be August.
For the 15th of the previous month to have fallen on a Tuesday when the current month has the 15th on a Friday, the previous month must have 31 days. For the 15th to fall in the following month on a Monday, then, the current month must also have 31 days. For the three months to all occur in the same year, the month must be August -- as it and its prior month are the only months that are consecutively 31 days occuring within the same year.
The year of purchase, itself, is an unknown element. Yet, as the problem is written in past tense (also the 12 month loan is implied to have been totally paid off) and the problem is posted as of August of 2006, the year the gift was bought would most likely be 2002. Of course the gift could have been purchased in an earlier year (1996, 1985, 1979....).
