On the other hand, if he had continued with his original speed, he would have arrived 20 minutes later.
How far did Carl have to travel?

d = distance in km
x = initial speed in km/hr
t = actual time taken in hr
40/x + (d-40)/(x+2) = t
d/(x+2) = t - 2/3
d/x = t + 1/3
Using Excel's solver, we get
d = 60
x = 10
t = 17/3
so the distance would be 60 km.
