The International Organization of Standards defines Monday as the first day of the week. And it is recognized as such by many countries, including most of Europe, Asia, and South America. Yet, in other countries, primarily the United States and Canada, Sunday is recognized as the first day.
American, though most often refers to a person of the United States, may also refer to a person of any region of the Western hemisphere. If the American man and his wife were from one of the regions that recognized Monday as the first day of the week, the pronunciation would most likely not be in the English language.
Thus, the "trick" is the American IS from the United States where Monday is the second day of the week, and is not a day that would be pronounced "Chonday".
