what values a,b cause the roots of the equation to be a and b and the discriminant to be equal to c?

Interesting thought, Steve.
However, the discriminant can't be complex! It is composed of real numbers.
Unless, of course, one or more of a, b, or c is complex ... Now that could be messy!
