How Fast?!? (Posted on 2005-08-08) Difficulty: 2 of 5
You are driving a 3.2 Litre, V6 car whose engine speed is 3500rpm.

If the piston face diameter is 80mm, then what is the average speed of the piston?

3.2 litres, refers to total piston volume

Basically, a V6 engine type means there are 6 pistons, each with the same displacement, 3.2 litres is 3200cc, this means that each piston has a displacement of 533.33cc

the piston diameter is 80mm, this means that the C.S.A of the piston is 5026mm^2, or 50.26cm^2

this equates the stroke to 533.33/50.26 = 10.612cm or 106.12mm

so in every revolution of the engine each piston will travel 106.12 x 2 = 212.24mm if the engine is rotating at 3500 rpm the average piston speed is 3500 x 212.24 mm/min = 742840mm/min = 742.840 M/min = 44.5704 Km/Hr
