Four 3s Rotated (Posted on 2008-08-06) Difficulty: 4 of 5
The following array of "*'s" 'masks' four three letter words which are to be read in the usual practice of left to right, and top down.

* * *
*   *
* * *
Now here are some considerations.
1. Letter frequency is not restricted.
2. When all places are filled, all letters are rotated one place (direction is immaterial) around the square. At that point you must still have four three letter words.
3. Common English words are preferred.

(Words borrowed from other languages are acceptable, but try to limit words rarely found in English.)

I lost my original solution where words were more attune with current usage; I think I may have had one of those which Charlie derived that used "she" and "ash".

I did derive an instance where I can go clockwise or anticlockwise from my initial position. Unfortunately I do not comply with my requirement of "common" English.

dey - historical title of the Commander/Governor of Algiers/Tripoli
wey - unit of weight (c. 2 to 3 cwt with Old English and Germanic origins)

O D E
N   Y
E W E

N O D
E   E
W E Y

D E Y
O   E
N E W

Interestingly I applied a search of Charlie's initial list and could not find "NOD" or "WEY". Ah! While Charlie did not list the solution which I offered, he did have the third arrangement of the above set; the computer instructions just didn't look at that possibility. Note also that Charlie did edit his list which may have taken the above out of contention.

Further of Charlie's comments form a rather comprehensive set of possibilities.
