Let me change the focus.

For some reason I am being given an ultimatum and so "I the solver leave you  the author  no alternative."

The sentence demonstrates something.

Difficulty of 3 says I should not be looking for something too obscure.

These have to be my clues.

Why is 124 so prominent?  Some sort of doubling function is not apparent.

Stepping from one key to another on the number pad has some possible appeal until one cannot move to an adjacent key.

I remember seeing this under a different title.  I am wondering it even that adds to my thought that there is a connection to either Morse, or Braille, both alternatives.
