     log 2(3) = x

     log 2(9) ?

The problem is obviously asking for an answer expressed in terms of x. (Otherwise, you could just use a calculator.) By definition of the log function, loga(b^2) is equal to 2*loga(b). Thus, log 2(9) = 2 * log 2(3) = 2x
